Youth Sewing Camp Ignites Creativity, Builds Community at Theatre Northwest

The Theatre Northwest Sewing Camp has sparked creativity and community for over a decade, building a love for sewing among young people. Each year, from June 29 to July 24, the camp introduces students to sewing, starting with the basics and working up to more challenging garment fixes.

This summer, about 50 students signed up. The camp just keeps getting more popular, drawing in folks of all ages and skill levels.

The curriculum covers a lot. Students learn how to use a sewing machine, take measurements, read pattern pieces, and make garment alterations.

Projects vary—some are simple, like plushies, beanies, or bags, while others get more ambitious, such as dresses or fabric envelopes. There’s always something to challenge you, but nothing feels out of reach.

She remembers campers determined to make accessories for their stuffed animals. Their excitement when they realize they can turn two scraps of fabric into something real is just infectious.

Community Support and Generosity

The camp wouldn’t be the same without the community’s generosity. Most of the fabric, supplies, and even some sewing machines have been donated by locals over the years.

These donations keep the camp stocked and make it possible for more kids to join in, no matter their background.
