Kansas City Collaboration Revives Vintage Fabrics and Upcycling Trends
At a time when big-box craft stores are struggling, Kansas City-based designer and author Amy Barickman has launched a new project. The Treasured Threadz Collection is a line of fabric panels created with Colonial Patterns to connect modern makers with timeless designs from the past.
Barickman is known for her love of vintage textiles. She crafted this collection to celebrate the history of needlework and quilting and to inspire a new generation of crafters.

The Genesis of Treasured Threadz
The Treasured Threadz Collection is a tribute to the artistry of handcrafted textiles. It is a collaboration with Colonial Patterns, a Kansas City company known for Aunt Martha’s iron-on transfer patterns.
The partnership grew from a shared goal of preserving and updating vintage designs for today’s crafters. Barickman and Colonial Patterns have long admired each other’s work.
A Natural Partnership
The collaboration was a natural fit because of their shared dedication to the craft. Barickman remembers her interactions with Bud Price, former owner of Colonial Patterns, and how his sons, Matt and Chris Price, have continued the business.
This partnership led to the creation of Treasured Threadz, which includes:
- Fabric panels featuring folk patchwork and collaged vintage artwork
- A fusible stabilizer that can be used on various textiles
- Instructional materials to inspire creativity and preserve the art of handcrafted textiles
Barickman’s Journey and Vision
Barickman’s interest in vintage textiles is personal. After selling her line of vintage sewing patterns, Indygo Junction, to Prym Dritz, she shifted focus to her passion for textiles.
Her large archive of historical embroidery transfers, fabric prints, and handmade garments has influenced the Treasured Threadz Collection. Barickman’s love for sewing was nurtured by her mother, a Home Ec teacher, and her grandmother, who loved to sew.
A Legacy of Craftsmanship
This family influence is reflected in the nostalgic and heirloom quality of the collection. Barickman wants to encourage a renewed appreciation for slow, mindful crafting and upcycling.
She suggests finding affordable fabrics at thrift shops, making sewing accessible and sustainable.
The Collection in Detail
The Treasured Threadz Collection is more than fabric panels. It’s a toolkit for creativity and preservation.
The collection features:
- Five different fabric panels blending folk patchwork and vintage artwork
- A fusible batting stabilizer for T-shirts, jean jackets, and pillows
- Instructional materials to guide crafters
Bridging Generations of Crafters
Barickman hopes Treasured Threadz connects generations of crafters. By reviving old patterns for modern makers, she aims to keep handcrafted artistry alive.
The collection encourages crafters to explore the history of needlework and quilting.
Future Plans and Projects
Barickman and Colonial Patterns are already working on new projects. These include a line of flour sack towels for hand embroidery and new patterns.
The new products are expected to launch later this year, continuing their mission to celebrate handcrafted textiles.
Stay Tuned for More
Barickman is expanding the Treasured Threadz Collection. She is also working on a new book.
This new book will explore vintage textiles. It aims to inspire crafters with fresh ideas.
