Empowering Women: Zhibek Batyrkulova’s Sewing Academy Revolutionizes Kyrgyzstan

In the heart of Kyrgyzstan, something remarkable is happening. Zhibek Batyrkulova, just 28, has turned her sewing studio into a beacon of hope and independence for women in Manas.

Her Sewing and Design Academy isn’t just a business. It’s become a catalyst for change, giving young women and mothers the skills and confidence they need to stand on their own feet.

Supported by the Government of the Russian Federation and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Zhibek’s initiative is part of a bigger push to spark economic opportunities and boost regional development in Kyrgyzstan.

The Vision Behind Zhibek Batyrkulova’s Academy

Zhibek’s journey started six years ago when she opened her own sewing studio. But she soon realized her mission was bigger than making beautiful clothes.

She wanted to empower young women and mothers by sharing the know-how to achieve financial independence. “An empowered woman means a prosperous family. And empowered youth means a strong country,” Zhibek says, and you can tell she really means it.

Empowering Women and Youth

Zhibek’s Academy isn’t only about teaching a trade. It’s a supportive space where women build confidence and learn to rely on themselves.

The Academy’s success mirrors a broader national effort to boost the creative industries and small businesses in Kyrgyzstan. With backing from the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, local authorities, and international partners, Zhibek’s Academy is helping drive inclusive growth.

Modernizing Education and Business

The city of Jalal-Abad, now called Manas, has become a symbol of renewal. For Zhibek, the city’s new name was a nudge—it was time for her business to evolve too.

Thanks to a partnership between the Russian Federation and UNDP, entrepreneurs in Kyrgyzstan now have access to modern equipment and fresh opportunities to build lasting businesses. This support has turned Zhibek’s classrooms into up-to-date learning spaces, where students use new technologies and learn with innovative methods.

They’re mastering their craft to international standards. That’s no small feat in a place that’s changing so quickly.

Staying Ahead in Fashion and Technology

Fashion and technology never really stand still, do they? Zhibek’s Academy makes sure every student gets the best resources to chase their potential.

“We do not stand still. The city of Manas is growing, people’s expectations are changing, and we are changing together with them,” Zhibek says. Her focus on continuous improvement keeps the Academy ahead of the curve.

A Chain Reaction of Success

For Zhibek, her biggest achievement isn’t the sales numbers. It’s the number of doors she’s helped open for her students.

Many graduates have started their own studios and schools in Manas, Osh, and Batken. These new businesses boost local tax revenue, create jobs, and make the regional economy stronger.

Every studio opened by a graduate stands as proof of Zhibek’s vision—and of the supportive policies for small and medium businesses in Kyrgyzstan.

Contributing to Regional Development

Backing local entrepreneurs is key to building up entire economic value chains. Zhibek’s Academy is making a real difference, from creating new income sources and jobs to strengthening women’s economic independence.

The light industry and garment sector offer jobs for thousands of women across the regions. Sewing, design, and crafts have become some of the most accessible and fastest-growing parts of Kyrgyzstan’s creative industries.

The Broader Impact of Youth Entrepreneurship

Zhibek’s story isn’t a one-off. Youth entrepreneurship is picking up speed through the Janyration (“New Generation”) network, with financial support from the Russian Federation and UNDP.

So far, 76 youth business projects have received support worth USD 312,000, creating around 200 jobs. Another 52 projects are in the works, expected to add about 150 more jobs with investments totaling USD 442,000.

Building a Sustainable Future

For over thirty years, UNDP has worked closely with the Kyrgyz Republic to push national development forward. The partnership includes the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, regional administrations, and local authorities.

UNDP expands economic opportunities for women and youth. They focus on developing human capital and encouraging inclusive private sector growth.

With support from the Government of the Russian Federation, UNDP helps the Kyrgyz government create an environment where entrepreneurs like Zhibek can thrive. It’s all about giving people the space to unlock their potential and chase a sustainable future.

Zhibek Batyrkulova’s Academy stands out as a great example of the creative economy’s impact on regional development. By empowering women and youth, offering education and job opportunities, and encouraging local entrepreneurship, Zhibek is shaping a more resilient and prosperous Kyrgyzstan.
